We're thrilled to be working on the development of the Danshuis Rotterdam—a space that honors a rich legacy while embracing the pure joy of movement.
Rotterdam has always moved to its own rhythm. From the legendary visits of Josephine Baker and the Ballets Russes, to pioneering institutions like Codarts (founded in 1931 as the Netherlands' oldest professional dance school) and Scapino Ballet Rotterdam (1945, the country's oldest dance company) and the world's first HipHopHuis (2002) our city has been a home for dance innovation for nearly a century.
Building on Rotterdam's proud tradition, our vision is to create a cultural hub which ignites connection. Where ballet meets hip-hop, where contemporary flows into salsa, and where the diversity of global dance traditions brings people together.
The Danshuis will welcome everyone—regardless of age, ability, or experience. Here, joy is found in every first step and every thousandth leap. Movement becomes the language that connects us across generations, cultures, and backgrounds. From children discovering the delight of dance to seasoned dancers sharing their passion, from adaptive programs to professional workshops, we're building a space filled with movement, connection, and boundless joy.
We are currently working on the construction. Doors open in 2030, programming has already started.
Artist and photographer Paul Kooiker creates a 160-metre-long Wall of Dance, commissioned by Danshuis in Rotterdam. Joyful and slightly unsettling, moving and familiar. Wall of Dance consists of 64 new photographs of Dutch dancers of all ages, styles and levels. The life-size images will be on view for five years as a continuous installation surrounding the construction site of the future Danshuis in Katendrecht.
